Hyperbaric oxygen therapy in Esher, Surrey: what it is, who it helps, and what a session is like at FIT

What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?
You breathe oxygen inside a chamber where the air pressure is higher than normal. More pressure means your blood can carry more dissolved oxygen than usual.\
Pressure, explained: what is 2 ATA?
ATA means “atmospheres absolute”.
- 1 ATA is normal air pressure at sea level. It’s what you’re feeling right now.
- 2 ATA is double that. It’s roughly the pressure ten metres under water.
Our One Hype chamber reaches 2 ATA.\
Recovery after surgery or injury
This is what most people come to us for. Healing demands oxygen, and HBOT is designed to raise how much your blood can carry.
HBOT is used clinically as an add-on for slow-healing wounds, and studies in sport and post-operative recovery are ongoing.
Always speak to your surgeon, consultant or physio before booking. Timing after surgery matters, and they know your case.
Cognitive function, immune system and inflammation
People often ask us about focus, immunity and inflammation.
Members tell us they notice reduced stress and brain fog, alongside sleeping better and feeling less sore.
Who should check with a doctor first?
Speak to your GP before booking if you have:
- A health condition
- an ear, sinus or chest infection, or a fever
- recent surgery or an open wound
- pregnancy, or regular medication you’re unsure about
You’ll complete a health form and a hyperbaric health form before your first session. If it isn’t right for you, we’ll say so.
What a session is like at FIT
- Reception: You’re greeted and fill in a short health form and a hyperbaric health form.
- Downstairs: You head to the studio and meet a member of our gym team.
- Briefing: They give you an oxygen mask, talk you through the process and start your session.
- The session: 60 minutes, including compression (reaching 2 ATA) and decompression. Your ears may feel full as pressure builds, like a plane descending. Swallowing or yawning helps.
What you do inside the chamber
Sixty minutes sounds long. It isn’t.
- Watch something. There’s a TV in the chamber, so pick a show and settle in.
- Dress normally. Wear what you came in, and comfy is best.
- Do what you like. Relax, read, chat if you’ve brought someone (it’s a two-seater), or just switch off.
Afterwards: Hydrate well. Reactions differ. Some people feel a burst of energy, an “oxygen high”. Others feel tired, so take it easy and rest. Fuel up with a nutritious meal or snack.
