How Recycling can impact your health & wellbeing

We all know how important recycling is to the environment, but did you know it can also impact your overall health & wellbeing too?

The link between mental health and recycling isn’t that surprising when you consider it. Humans thrive in nature and healthy environments – therefore people live in heavily polluted areas tend to be at higher risk of developing psychological disorders, than those in clean and safer environments.

Today is Global Recycling Day so lets look at some of the ways recycling can help you achieve optimal wellness and longevity.

Recycling can positively impact your wellbeing in several ways:

  • Reduced Stress: Knowing that you’re contributing to environmental sustainability by recycling can alleviate stress and provide a sense of purpose and fulfilment. Many people find peace of mind in knowing they’re doing their part to protect the planet for future generations.
  • Improved Air and Water Quality: Recycling reduces the need for extracting, refining, and processing raw materials, which can lead to air and water pollution. Cleaner air and water contribute to better overall health and wellbeing.
  • Community Engagement: Recycling often involves community efforts, such as neighbourhood clean-up events or local recycling programs. Participating in these activities can foster a sense of belonging and connectedness within your community, which is beneficial for mental health.
  • Physical Activity: Recycling can involve physical activities such as sorting materials, carrying bins, or participating in clean-up efforts. Engaging in these activities provides exercise and fresh air, which are essential for physical health and wellbeing.
  • Recycling boosts mindfulness: When we recycle, we take time to look at our choices and slow down our daily pace. When we’re aware of the impact our lifestyles have on the environment we are able to create healthier habits and choices, and maybe even consider creative projects to stop wasting that thing.

How can you help with both recycling and reducing waste?

Reduce use of single use plastic bottles or coffee cups:
Start with reusable water bottles and coffee cups, stainless steel are better than a plastic based ones.
Plastic bottles can release harmful chemicals such as bisphenol-A (BPA) when exposed to heat or UV radiation. These chemicals can have adverse effects on your health, including hormonal imbalances and increased risk of certain diseases. Especially important if you’re using our Infrared Sauna – try to bring a stainless steel water bottle for use in the sauna!

Reduce paper usage with digital devices: Could you use your phone to make notes instead of a notepad? or get a digital notepad!
