Understanding S.A.D and the Potential Benefits of Infrared Sauna

What is S.AD? Seasonal Affective Disorder (S.A.D) is a type of depression that presents itself primarily in the autumn and winter months, when daylight becomes scarce. Symptoms can range from mild feelings of sadness and lethargy to more severe depressive symptoms. As people around the globe look for ways to mitigate the symptoms of S.A.D, alternative therapies like infrared saunas have been explored and some potential benefits have been identified.

What is Seasonal Affective Disorder (S.A.D)?

S.A.D is a form of depression that’s related to the changes in seasons. It typically starts in the late autumn and early winter, diminishing in the spring and summer.
Some common symptoms include:

  • Feelings of depression almost daily
  • Losing interest in activities you once enjoyed
  • Low energy and fatigue
  • Difficulty sleeping or oversleeping
  • Weight gain and increased appetite
  • Difficulty concentrating

While the exact cause of S.A.D is not known, it’s believed to be linked to reduced sunlight exposure, which can alter serotonin and melatonin levels in the brain – neurotransmitters responsible for mood and sleep regulation.

So why are Infrared Saunas different to regular saunas?

Infrared saunas differ from traditional saunas. Instead of heating the air around you, infrared saunas use infrared lamps to warm your body directly. This means that they can operate at a lower temperature than conventional saunas while still inducing heavy sweating and producing many of the same beneficial effects.

Benefits commonly associated with infrared saunas include:

  • Detoxification
  • Enhanced circulation
  • Pain relief
  • Skin purification
  • Relaxation

Infrared Saunas and S.A.D

While there isn’t a wealth of research directly linking infrared saunas to the treatment of S.A.D, there are reasons to believe they might be beneficial:

  1. Light Exposure: Even though infrared saunas do not replicate natural sunlight, exposure to the light from these saunas might positively affect the brain, similar to light therapy (a well-documented treatment for S.A.D).
  2. Relaxation: As with any form of warmth and relaxation, infrared saunas can help to reduce stress and increase feelings of well-being, potentially countering some of the depressive feelings associated with S.A.D.
  3. Improved Circulation: The heat from the sauna enhances blood flow, which can help in releasing endorphins, the body’s natural “feel good” chemicals.
  4. Detoxification: By inducing sweating, infrared saunas can help detoxify the body, possibly leading to an improved mood and overall sense of well-being.

It is however essential for individuals suffering from S.A.D or any other form of depression to consult a healthcare professional before incorporating new therapies into their routine, and Infrared Sauna should be use to help supplement your mental health treatment as diagnosed.
